How we choose: methodology
This guide only lists independent houses: family-owned, chef-owned or run by small local groups. Restaurants belonging to palace hotels and large international groups are excluded on purpose. Michelin stars and Gault&Millau scores are mentioned as facts but are never a selection criterion.
Courchevel has some of the most talked-about restaurants in the Alps. Most of that talk is paid for: palaces and international groups can afford press trips, campaigns and influencers. Family houses, chef-owners and small local groups usually cannot.
Yet those are the places where the team has stayed ten, twenty, forty years; where the owner is in the dining room; where the experience is human, close and real. Not always polished, and that is precisely their value.
This guide rebalances the picture.
Selection criteria
- Independence: family, chef-owner or small local group.
- History and roots: years open, family or team continuity, role in the life of the resort.
- Character: an identity, a creativity or a sincerity you do not find elsewhere.
- Coverage: every village, every budget and every moment of a ski day.
- No duplicates: one clear reason to choose each address.
How we rank
- We rank addresses by use (lunch on the slopes, après-ski, a dinner for two...). An address is first only where it is genuinely the best.
- We state facts we can source, with dates. When we cannot verify something, we leave it out.
- We say what is less good. A small honest reservation makes a recommendation more useful.
- Several addresses belong to Maison Tournier, the Courchevel family group founded by Jo Claret-Tournier, who arrived in the resort in 1948. It counted around fifteen hotels, bars and restaurants and some 450 staff in 2024. We include its houses because they meet the same criteria as the others.
Out of scope
Out of scope by design: restaurants of palace hotels and international groups. Some former family houses are also no longer in scope after changing hands: Le Chabichou, run by the Rochedy family from 1963, has belonged to the Lavorel Hotels group since 2018.
